A Global Perspective on Local Leadership: Moderating the Global Power Women Conference
As Deputy Borough President of Queens, New York, I've always understood the importance of a global outlook, even in local government. Our borough is a melting pot of cultures, and our policies must reflect the diverse needs of our residents. Moderating events like the Global Power Women Conference during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has been instrumental in broadening my perspective and learning from leaders around the world. I was asked to speak and attend many events, but this one particular one has become very special to me.
A Celebration of Women's Impact
It was an absolute honor to share the stage with such incredible women at the UNGA panel hosted by the Centre for Economic & Leadership Development. The event was a global celebration of women making a significant impact in various fields, from finance and policy to engineering, VC, and AI.
I was so inspired by the First Ladies who shared their inspiring work in their respective countries. Aria Ali, The First Lady of Guyana, talked about her commitment to addressing (and solving) period poverty, a testament to the power of leadership in driving positive change. She made sure 100% of school girls in Guyana have access to menstruation products and education. Then, The First Lady of Paraguay, shared all the way she is making her country better from developing community spaces to be more tourist and family friendly. She also mentioned all the great work she is doing for children in Paraguay.
A special shoutout to Dr. Ibifuro Ken-Giami, the executive director of the Centre for Economic & Leadership Development, for curating such a powerful group of women and facilitating discussions on important topics. It was not only eye opening and inspiring, but also showed everyone that we’re all just dealing with the same issues around the world when it comes to women. If we all come together as leaders we can inspire each other, collaborate and help to solve them more efficiently.
Moderating the Global Power Women Conference has been a transformative experience. It has not only broadened my perspective but also inspired me to continue working towards a more equitable and inclusive future for women in Queens and beyond. By learning from global leaders and collaborating with like-minded individuals, we can create a world where women have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
